After destroying 3 or 4 sets of gears on the RC4WD Warn 9.5cti winch, I decided to go for a servo winch. I had been thinking about it for a long time now, and after destroying the gears again last Saturday, I decided that now is time to do it. It had always been a problem as to where to place the servo winch. The way the Land Cruiser was set up during the original build, did not leave much room for a servo winch to be placed anywhere. So after some thinking, I decided to place the ESC that drove the car on the opposite side of where the ESC I was using as a winch controller. Both ESCs are the Hobbywing 1060, so if one fits ok, then the other would fit too. It all boiled down to a complete rewiring job.

Here you can see both ESC installed and being rewired. So many cables!!!!!
The servo winch fit great in the selected location. I used a simple bracket and some spacers to raise the whole kit off the original plate to allow for the spool to rotate with enough clearance.
Here you can see both ESC and the servo winch in place. The wiring is in progress.
Called it a day. The plan is, tomorrow I will finish off the wiring, complete with the lighting and remote switch.
I will then give it a short test drive here at the workshop followed by a rigorous test for the servo winch.
I can already imagine the Land Cruiser hanging on the winch line in this test |
