The time has come to build the structure to carry the main level baseboard.

I took this picture because we will never see this again once I start working on the structure.. enough testing, and time to move on.

Started by cutting up some reclaimed timber to 4cm*4cm to build the structure.

As I went along, I extended the main level over and beyond the edge of the lower level. There was room where I could make the new level bigger, even if it meant less room for me to stand in. Priorities, right?

The further along I went, the more I started to realise how important it would be to hinge the baseboard to be able to access the lower levels when the time came.

Especially in the far corners of the helix.

And all of a sudden, the room grew smaller and smaller.

The plan is not to cover every square inch with the baseboard, but to have a liftable village and/or industrial area that would cover these access areas.

Out of the blue, I thought of a quick and easy higher level to go around the parameter of the layout. This would be a great place to have a double line to carry long slow freight trains. Getting the trains up there was a different game.

The new level was 6cm higher than the main level, meaning I needed a 3-meter run to gain that height, and I came up with this. It is a single track which will be shared in both directions. It will be nice to see trains stop to give way to one another

As you can see, the baseboards are in two sections. Fixed, at the back under the incline and a hinged front section which, when lifted, give me full access to the fiddle yard and helix below. I am considering using dampers to hold these up!

Here is the liftable bridge, which will give me access to the layout area. The "bridge" has two levels.

There are two options to be considered.

1 Lift both levels on one set of hinges, thus making the bridge one unit and lift up from on the hinges on the upper level of the bridge or

2 drop down each level separately on either side of the gap.

I am not decided yet.

This is the finished product so far. Loads of work to be done still, but that is good, VERY good

Next is to extend the track from the helix to the main level... one step at a time.
