Elevated area for the coal mine...

This is the last of the elevated areas. The idea is to keep the upper level in touch with the residential and industrial areas. They will also serve to cover the holes remaining in the corners of the layout. It will be a lot easier to access the lower level/helix by simply lifting these elevated areas, thus exposing the access, than opening the upper level in full.

I started cutting some foam with my homemade foam cutter, and then, after marking where the track is, I cut out the tunnel entrances.

I held the foam in shape using masking tape after which I cut some plywood to use as the lid/floor. The coal yard, including some other buildings related to the coal yard, will be built on this open space.

I found these quite simple to make, with the added benefit of hiding the track joints on the opening section of the main level baseboard. They also serve as some kind of scenic break around the track.
