Class 142 DMU overdue for service.

I have neglected some of my locomotives and are past due for some badly needed maintenance. The two in question today are the Class 142 Pacer DMUs. Both have done over 44Km and as astonishing as that may be, the Class 66 further up in the list is almost at 50km since the last service.

I always liked the look of these DMUs and they work hard on my layout. One trip around the layout is just over 15m and with the average route for these DMS being 5 runs from the main station to the smaller station on the upper level, they clock up the km. On a good day I run them about 5 routes, so that would be just under 400m.

So starting by splitting the drive car from the dummy car, it is easier to handle them when split apart.

It is extremely simple to remove the wheels. Although only the drive car has gears, the axles on both cars have gears on them. You're always driving around with 2 spare axles in case of a split gear on the axle

After a good cleaning of the axles gears and wheels, I like to clean the axle contacts on the side of the chassis frame. They tend to gather a lot of dirt in the contact socket.

After a slight drop of oil onto the gear, it is time to put the wheels back in place. Look at them shine now

And here we have the DMU exiting a tunnel onto the main level on its way to the main station where some passengers are waiting to get a ride to work

This is the 2nd DMU which I will be servicing next...

Stay tuned and don't forget to register for post updates...
